The tools of hearing recorded music has changed drastically throughout time. I thought it was interesting how sound was produced through a cylinder at first then advanced to the form of a disc. Later on we advanced to cassette tapes, cds, and audio streaming platforms that provided not only portability, but better sound quality. When listening to the phonograph and gramophone provided in the linked video, you can hear our advancement of sound quality we’ve achieved over time.

Throughout the time period of 1877-1920, there was an emergent of evolution that changed the way people would view sounds physically and verbally. What once began with a simple combination of a disk and a cylinder, soon became what is an underrated transformation of the audio streaming platforms that we hear on a daily basis. On the video link displayed there is a deeper explanation on the differences between the way it is formed, heard, and how the growth flourished into how it is today. I found it very fascinating that John Philip Sousa’s brass marching band was able to become popular because their records were truly loud and could be better heard on record players. He was one of the first to sell a great deal of marching band sheet music in the late 1890s and I have personally played some of his pieces in my time throughout middle school and high school band. So this just shows how influential he was and still is. He isn’t called the “March King” for nothing.
